Press Release July 13th - 07/13/2009 08:59 PM
The Eau Claire Cavaliers were defeated 7-0 by the Exeland Braves before 430 people on Epilepsy Foundation Night by former Cavalier and Eau Claire Express pitcher Adam Ferrell. Adam pitched seven strong innings and was relieved by another former Cavalier pitcher Adam Rothenbuler who pitched 2 scoreless innings.
Cav’s starting pitcher Ben Kincaid pitched six strong innings before walking three Braves in the seventh, resulting in three runs. The defense didn’t make it any easier, totaling three errors as the Exeland Braves (24-3) scored six runs in the inning on just two hits, Kincaid allowed just one earned run and struck out 11.
Andy Abromaitis led the game offensively for the Cavaliers, going 2-for-4 with two singles. Soya Aoki did some damage on the base paths, going 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
Cavs bounce back with an 8-0 victory over the St. Paul East Side Merchants. Eau Claire tallied four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead, eventually winning by a final score of 8-0 over the East Side Merchants in a nonleague game in front of 150 people at Carson Park.
Ty Fadness led off the rally with one out after being hit by a pitch. Ben Kincaid and Lance Poppy would walk consecutively on full counts to load the bases for Eau Claire Memorial graduate Ben Sebesta---making his first start in 19 games after suffering a back injury.
Sebesta’s return couldn’t have come a better moment. The third baseman took the first pitch fastball and drilled it to the left center field gap for a double, scoring all three runners on base.
Alex Burian singled to drive in Sebesta, giving the Cavs (27-13) more than enough to guarantee the win with hard- throwing right-hander Troy Peiffer on the mound.
Peiffer went the distance for the shutout, striking out 10 batters while walking just four.
The Cavaliers struck again in the seventh scoring two runs on two hits and a walk.
Kincaid walked on four straight pitches and then Poppy doubled to left field on a hard-hit line drive. Sebesta followed with a double to score Poppy, his fourth RBI of the game.
Apart from the strong offensive presence and Peiffer’s performance on the mound, catcher Chase Graskewicz showed a glimpse of his cannon of an arm as he picked off two runners from first base and made several key stops behind the plate.
After a frustrating 7-0 loss Wednesday, Eau Claire did what it always seems to do, as the Cavaliers responded with full force.
“With losses we just throw behind us and we focus on the next game,” Sebesta said. “Everyone does their part and we do what we need to do. We have a good ball club here.”
