Eau Claire scored four more runs in the sixth inning, taking a commanding 10-3 lead. Ryan Iverson scored on an attempted pickoff throw to get Matt Miller at first base as the ball went into the right-field bullpen. Miller reached third base, and then scored on a single courtesy of another Memorial product, Ty Fadness.
Leading the offense for Eau Claire was the catcher Trewyn.
Trewyn reached base in every at-bat, going 1-for-1 with a walk, hit-by-pitch and a run scored. He also had two key sacrifice bunts in the game.
For the second straight game, welcomed Mr. Opportunity’s proverbial knock with open arms by the
Eau Claire Cavaliers as they defeated the Menomonie Eagles 5-2, in front of 486 people Wednesday at Carson Park on Fan Appreciation Night. A familiar face was on the mound for Menomonie, Eau Claire North graduate Mitch running.
Running struggled with his command early, allowing three runners to advance a total of seven bases by wild pitches and one misplayed pickoff attempt.
Chase Graskewicz scored on a Ben Otto groundout in the second inning but the Eagles quickly responded.
In the top of the third inning, Luke Schultz took Cavaliers starter Dale Kube deep, hitting a towering home run over the fan deck in right field. Luke Welch scored on the dinger, giving Menomonie a 2-1 advantage.
Kube did not allow another hit after the homer, finishing with six innings pitched and just three hits allowed.
Eau Claire (42-20) got more offense in the bottom of the third inning from the top of its batting order.
Ty Fadness doubled to right field to score Brad Archambeau and then was knocked in by Ben Sebesta on an infield single.
The Cavaliers’ potent top of the order provided a little cushion in the fourth.
Menomonie native Ben Otto scored on a sacrifice fly courtesy of Matt Miller. The next pitch, Fadness struck again with a triple to right-center field, scoring Brad Archambeau. It was Fadness’ second extra base hit of the game, giving the Cavs the final lead of 5-2.
The Eau Claire Cavaliers saw their season come to an end on a high note as they defeated the Marshfield Chaparrals, 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Carson Park.
Both the Chaps and the Cavs (43-20) utilized small ball to their advantage as they combined for eight sacrifices in the game. The Cavaliers had four of them.
Down 1-0, Eau Claire scored three runs off Marshfield starter Howie Heinrich.
The Cavaliers first tally of the game came on a bases loaded balk. Ryan Iverson and Kyle Trewyn gave Eau Claire the lead when Chuck Brehm misplayed a ground ball to first base.
Marshfield kept fighting, scoring a run in the third and another in the fifth, all off of Cavaliers starter Ben Kincaid.
Troy Peiffer, normally a starter, took the mound in the fifth with two runners on base. He walked a batter to load the bases, then forced two fly-outs and a strikeout to end the inning. He threw three innings Saturday, allowing two walks and striking out two.
Eau Claire North graduate Ryan Iverson came in to close out the game in the eighth inning.
Iverson ran into trouble in the eighth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Iverson threw three straight balls to Brehm with the score sitting at 6-3. Iverson came all the way back to strikeout Brehm to end the inning and earn his first save of the season.
Though the season is over, baseball will continue for one of the Cavaliers. Mark Shaver (Minnesota-Duluth) signed with the Duluth Huskies of the Northwoods League, McHorney said. Shaver was 7-2 with a 4.09 ERA. He started 14 games and threw a team-leading seven complete games.
