2009 saw the Lombard Orioles continue their domination of the Wisconsin State Baseball League. Skipper Jeff Vukovich’s ball club posted a 24-8 record to claim its sixth straight title, eight of the last nine seasons and 10th in the last 13.
The Eau Claire Cavaliers finished in second place; four games back at 20-12 and won 3 out of 4 with the Orioles and 3 out of four from the Kenosha Kings. The Cavaliers won 7 of their last eight games to make a move in the league to finish in second place.
Brad Archambeau of the Eau Claire Cavaliers, who tied a league record with six triples this season, hit .376 to finish second in hitting. Eau Claire teammate Matt Miller was third at .370. Ty Fadness finished with a .314 batting average.
Tyler Martin finished 5-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 52 innings in 8 games striking out 29, Phil Isaacson finished 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 40 innings striking out 32, and Mark Shaver finishes with a 5-1 record with a 3.58 ERA in 50.1 innings striking out 37.
Eau Claire’s first baseman, Lance Poppy set a league record by handling 227 chances without and error to lead the field in fielding.
