Press Release July 6th - 07/07/2009  05:22 PM

An intracity match up between the Eau Claire Bears and Eau Claire Cavaliers always proves to be a close game between two talented teams, and Wednesday night’s cross-town competition was no exception.

The Cavaliers (22-11) – currently on a 12-game win streak –rode a dominant pitching performance by Yoshinori Machida to a 3-0 victory before 425 hometown fans for Oral Surgery Associates Night at Carson Park.

Machida wasted no time, striking out the side in the first inning and retired the first nine batters he faced.

Machida threw the first seven innings allowing three hits and striking out four and Jason Dorn pitched the last two innings allowing one hit and striking out four.

The Eau Claire Cavaliers continue to show no weakness on the diamond as they defeated the Winona Chiefs, 4-1, in front of 1,410 people at Carson Park on Waax 104.5, Markquart Motors and Micon Cinema Night.

The win was the 13th straight for Eau Claire (23-11), providing some much needed momentum heading into Saturday’s doubleheader against Wisconsin State League rival Kenosha.

Winona struck first in the third inning, as center fielder Brett Schmidt hit a hard line drive onto the Fan Deck in right field off Cavaliers pitcher and Eau Claire Memorial graduate Ben Kincaid.

Eau Claire responded well, and promptly scoring two runs in the bottom of the third.

Eau Claire added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and Troy Pieffer shut down the Chiefs to earn the save.

Behind a pair of complete games and some late game heroics from Soya Aoki, the Eau Claire Cavaliers swept the Kenosha Kings, 2-1 and 3-2, in a Wisconsin State League doubleheader Saturday at Carson Park.

Mark Shaver and Tyler Martin tossed consecutive complete seven inning complete game gems as the Cavs (25-11,8-6) ran their winning streak to 15 games.

Shaver allowed one run on four hits, struck out six and walked two in the opener, which was settled by Aoki’s walk off single.

Tyler Martin allowed 3 hits, one a two run homerun by
Ross Conwell, walked 3 and struck out three.

The Cavs scored three runs in the bottom of the second and that was enough to hold off the Kings. The Cavs loaded the bases with one out in the second inning on a single by Kyle Trewyn and consecutive walks to Abromaitis and Otto.

A single by Brad Archambeau, coupled with an error by King’s catcher Brad Medina cleared the bases and put Eau Claire up 3-0.

That allowed Martin to withstand a two-run Kenosha fourth. Both runs came across on a two-run homer by Conwell.

The Eau Claire Cavaliers had their 15 game winning streak ended with a 6-2 defeat at the hands of the Kenosha Kings (26-12,9-7).  Eau Claire jumped on top early in the opener as Brad Archembeau tripled into the right-field gap, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Ty Fadness.

The Cavs would tack on another run in the fourth inning when Ben Otto doubled to score Lance Poppy from second base.

And that’s when Kenosha (14-10,6-4) struck gold.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Kings rallied behind five hits and two walks to score six runs off Eau Claire’s starting pitcher Chevy Tollefson.

Game two was a definition of a pitchers duel as Eau Claire’s Justin Cooper and Kenosha’s Jon Kleinmeyer held both teams hitless until the fourth inning.

Cavaliers second baseman Matt Miller recorded the first hit of the game, rolling a precision bunt down the third base line being the only hit of the inning was a sign of good things to come.

Poppy walked, and Kyle Trewyn reached base on a throwing error, allowing the pair to move into scoring position.

Three errors, four hits and six runs later, the Cavaliers found themselves on top of the same situation that held them down in game one.

Cooper would hold down the fort but couldn’t quite reach the complete game, finishing with 6-2/3 innings pitched and nine strikeouts while allowing just two earned runs.

Brent Mueller came on and picked up the save getting John Hasser to fly out to third baseman Ben Kincaid.

The Eau Claire Leader Telegram provided the game results.
