Regis grad Welke dies at 60

Ted Welke, one of the finer athletes to come out of Regis High School and Eau Claire, died Dec. 19 in Apple Valley, Minn., at the age of 60.

At Regis, Welke was a three-sport standout, pitching four years of baseball on two state tournament teams and gaining All-Northwest honors while playing football three years. He graduated in 1974 and continued his baseball career at Huron College in South Dakota and on one weekend, he pitched two wins and got a save. Welke played two years with the Eau Claire Cavaliers and in a 7-0 shutout of Tony, the hard-throwing lefthander struck out 16 batters.

While coaching and teaching at Highmore, S.D., a 1981 auto accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. For years, he battled and rehabbed and was courageously able to regain the use of his hands, going on to lead a full life out of his wheelchair.
