Press Release June 29, 2009
Yoshinri Machida threw six shutout innings as the Eau Claire Cavaliers beat the Red Wing Aces 4-0 for their sixth consecutive victory Tuesday night at Red Wing, MN.
Lance Poppy drove in a pair of runs and Ty Fadness went 2-for-5 with two runs scored for the Cavaliers (16-11).
Troy Peiffer picked up the save in relief of Machida. He struck out four and gave up three hits in three innings.
The Cavaliers shut out the Taylor County Seaters 13-0 in a game shortened to seven innings because of the 10 run mercy rule. Starting pitcher Justin Cooper shined throughout the night, striking out 13 and allowing just two hits and walked none in 6 innings.
Brent Mueller came in relief to close out the game in the seventh, providing a bit of entertainment for both teams. Brent’s father is the manager of Taylor County, and his brother Ben also plays on the team. Both were due up in the seventh inning.
Mueller got his dad to ground out, but hit his brother Ben in the leg. Brent said he would never hear the end of that.
Matt Miller had himself a night, going combined 4-for-9 with three runs scored and 6 RBI’s to lead the Eau Claire Cavaliers to a two team doubleheader sweep, defeating the St. Paul Red Rooster, 12-0, and St. Paul East Side Merchants. 9-5.
Tyler Martin couldn’t quite go the distance as he picked up his third win of the season against the Merchants. Martin finished with 8-1/3 innings pitched while allowing five runs and striking out eight.
Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of the Sparta Millers had a local feel to it for the Eau Claire Cavaliers.
Starting pitchers Chevy Tollefson and Phil Isaksson—Eau Claire Memorial and North graduates, respectively- each picked up wins as the Cavaliers defeated the Millers, 7-1 and 12-3, at Carson Park. Ben Kincaid another Memorial graduate, pitched in relief in the nightcap. The Cavaliers 21-11 now have run their winning streak to 11 straight games.
